LESSON  9
Pick n Mix

LESSON  9
Pick n Mix

We all have a Pick n Mix!

You have spent all of your life building your knowledge, skills, contacts, experience and expertise.  This is your personal ‘Pick n Mix’ – like a bag of sweets. All the different sweets are your knowledge, skills, contacts, experience and expertise.

We’ve learnt amazing things.  We’ve met wonderful people. We’ve survived life. Now is the time to use all of this experience!

Over many years you have created initiatives, undertaken jobs, learned new skills, worked on projects, looked after children, cared for people when they were ill, been to different places, etc.

You have this ‘bag of goodies’ ready to use at any time! We can harvest in so many areas of our lives - our work, relationships, projects, successes or where we overcame difficulties, made things happen, etc. There are many more options available to us.

 Asset Based Personal Development

The concept of Asset Based Personal Development can be explained as our personal ‘‘Pick and Mix’’ of skills, experience, knowledge, relationships, contacts, resources, etc.

You have spent all your life building your knowledge, skills, contacts, experience and expertise. This is your Pick n Mix – represented by jelly-beans, dolly mixtures, hundreds and thousands, cola bottles, smarties, etc!

You have this ‘bag of goodies’ ready to enjoy at any time!

Now is the time to use this all this potential!

So, delve into your bag of Pick n Mix and pull out what you are good at, what gives you a buzz, your strengths and what you really enjoy!

Remember…
  • Your future workpieces do not have to start from your last job.
  • You can use any skills, experiences, interests, hobbies, etc.  that you have gained at any time throughout your life to create new workpieces.
  • Think about who you can help. Be specific with what you can offer or support.

What’s in your ‘Pick and Mix’?

Explore with questions…...
·       What jobs have you had in the past? Are any of these relevant now?
·       What documents are on your computer? Could you use this information in a new way?
·       What do you know about?
·       What are you interested in?
·       How could you help others?

We must learn to explore and play with possibilities and ides from our Pick n Mix. Be creative! What if?

Re-using your ‘Pick and Mix’

1.     Nothing is ever lost. All of our experience, knowledge and insights understanding stay with us – ready to be accessed at any stage in the future.

2.     Everything can be reformatted, re-shaped and reused within the new context of where we are going and what we really want to do.

3.     Negative experiences and disappointments can be reconfigured within a bigger understanding of who we are, what we have learned and how we can help others in a similar position. These difficulties and disappointment find a better place within our overall understanding and indeed mail for new insights or learning.

Using your ‘Pick and Mix’ to support others

All of our skills, experience, knowledge are our assets. We can use these to further our career, develop business ideas, create new initiatives and support others.

It is within this last context that we can explore ways to proactively reach out to others. How can we use our personal assets (our ‘‘Pick and Mix’’) in a way that supports and helps others who are struggling emotionally, financially, with work, needing income, lonely or unhappy?

Our ‘‘Pick and Mix’’ of life has built within each of us not only a level of expertise and experience but also a platform of understanding and resilience. We have experienced difficulties at times and therefore can reach out not with not just with knowledge, skills and experience but also with empathy, understanding and sensitivity. For this is not about doing things to others. It is about working with others and helping them to do well.

EXERCISE -  Old contacts new possibilities

Using your ‘Pick and Mix’ identify 12 people from your past who you have not been in touch with for a while. Draft an email or text for them. Ask how they are. Tell them that you were thinking about them, what you are doing now and that you would love to hear how they are. Send the emails/texts.
