 LESSON  1
Getting Started

LESSON  1
Getting Started

Work it Out!  Training notes

Welcome from Des McCabe

I’d like to personally welcome you to Work it Out!

Work it Out! is a completely new and different way to build your career and your success.

It doesn’t matter what your education is. It doesn’t matter what your background is. It doesn’t matter what your experience is. It doesn’t matter what your current situation is.

You will get the most  from this training if you complete the key tasks in each of the lessons. Just be determined to follow the process. It can help you to find work, to earn money and to build your future in new ways. It can be an exciting, challenging and amazing journey – so enjoy it, be positive and give it 100%!

This training is FREE to use!

The full Work it Out! process is licensed to many  training bodies, government  departments, local authorities, grant agencies  and individual facilitators.

This training is free for individuals to access here. This does  not mean it is of little value! Quite  the opposite in fact. Over 18,000 people have already benefitted directly from taking part in Work it Out!  sessions. It's just that we  want as many people to have  access as possible.

Work it Out! is inclusive of everyone and we have a broad ranges of skills and experience on every programme. We get people from 16 - 96. Yes, some people are on their third careers  - keeping their brains  busy, earning income and sharing their experience in amazing ways. Likewise, we have teenagers  (and teachers) keen to make the best of their futures  right from now.  We have  Mums at home, business managers, migrants, community workers, underemployed, self-employed, people with disabilities, those who are lonely,  those with ideas  and those who just want to take a look at their future and where they are going.

This is an interactive and dynamic process

You can complete the lessons in your own time. I  suggest that you work through all of the lessons in order. However, you can jump ahead to a particular lesson if you need to. You can also go back and reflect on something you’ve already looked at because you see or understand things better.

This process will unfold with you. It's not meant to be read like a book, in a passive way. Make the material work for you. The training is like a personalised training course or series of mentoring sessions. So utilise it in this way.

Your Journal  or Notebook

So as you begin your training make sure that you have a notebook or journal. This can be a physical notebook, files on your computer or notes on your phone. Take notes as you go along and capture all your ideas.  Complete the Exercises in your notebook. Treat your journal as a conversation with yourself.  You should be writing something every day  capturing what you've learned or experienced.  We call  it 'harvesting' - but more of that later.

The 'Work It Out!' Journal does things:
1. Keeps you focused on your priorities.
2. Provides evidence that you are moving in the right direction every day.
3. Is a record of how far you have travelled.
4. Sets you up for being successful today in moving your career forward..

You can go back and look at your journal, revisit your own steps and see the progress, developments and changes that you have experienced. This will help you to understand your own journey, what is happening in your life and key indicators or signposts for your future direction.

You are much more that a participant in this process.

On most courses you would be the participant and the trainer  would be the ‘expert’ or ‘trainer’. The Work it Out! process is very different!  You are invited from now to work with us and be an active member of the Work it Out! family. Family members help and support each other and that’s what we seek to do. So please share these materials with others and build your own local network. Each of us is different and each of us can bring something special – like encouragement, advice, technical help, an idea or personal support.

Who will you journey with?

You will get the most out of this process if you work with one or more people. This will enable you to discuss key points and to support each other as you work through the lessons.

Those attending Work it Out!  events locally will have a ready made group of colleagues  but if you are reading this on your own, who will be your Work it Out! colleague(s)?

  •  A good friend?
  • Business colleague?
  • Family members?
  • Fellow employee?
  •  ...and don't forget about you contacts online or on social media?

Thousands of people have already benefitted from Work it Out! training – in person, with my colleagues and I – and online. It's good to link up with someone  and encourage each other.

Feedback Form

Please complete the Feedback Form  when you feel you have made some progress. This may be after three weeks or three months but it would be great to hear about  your successes and your story.

I look forward to working with you and am excited to be part of your journey. Thank you.

 EXERCISE -  Getting Started

  1. Set aside some time  every day to  do this  training.  It might be one Lesson per day  or 20 minutes per day. Decide now and plan in the time!
  2. Get  your notebook.
  3. Think about a colleague to work with on this.  It's not essential but it's great to have someone to bounce ideas  off  - and you can encourage/help each other
  4.  Do something every day (DSED) from now to move  forward.
