FAQ  (Frequently Asked Questions)
The Work it Out! way of working

Before you start the Work it  Out! process please read  this page carefully.  You need to be able to explain to others what Work it Out! is  and  what our ways of working are - especially the 14 values and behaviours.

What is  Work it Out!?

The purpose of Work it Out! is to help to build a kinder and more compassionate way of being and working together - one in which we proactively look after each other, respect each other, create and enable opportunities and so help each individual to fulfil their personal potential.

Work it Out! is fully inclusive of everyone irrespective of age, background, experience or current situation. All are welcome to come along to one of our weekly meetings - locally and/or online. Our adult programs are for anyone aged 16 or over, regardless of their age. Our programmes for young people are for those up to age 15.

Work it Out! is not simply an employment or business growth or personal development or community support process. Our aim is to create an environment and a framework which helps each person to achieve all that is important to them. This can relate to work, income, a better job, personal or health issues, a new career, growing a business, building a community initiative and much more.

Work it Out! is about growing in our own lives, in the way we interact with others and in our contribution in the world. For we are all here to help make our world a kinder and better place. Work it Out! helps individuals to bring their skills, experience, interests and knowledge to bear on making this happen.

What is the Work it Out! way of working?

Our values, behaviours and ways of working, which underpin all of our activities, are set out below. Every member is committed to taking personal responsibility each of the elements listed. Please join the group only if you are happy to work this way.

1. We are a  proactive and collaborative community where everybody is equally important. We value each person and work with everyone to enable all members to achieve all that is important to them.

2. We help people to build themselves up. We encourage them. We congratulate them. We ask how they are. We are interested in what they are doing - always, at every opportunity.

3.  We are continually grateful for the help and support of others. We recognise that others give of their time and expertise at no cost and  share our expressions gratitude as often and as freely as we can. We know that Work it Out! is a precious gift and never take the activities, events, training or support for granted.

4. We share our successes, however small or insignificant these may seem to us. We recognise that they are building blocks for us and encouragement for others. Participating and sharing in weekly meetings and supporting others is a success.

5. We link up with others. This may be for a particular workpiece, because we are learning a new skill, because of something they said or need, or because of where they live. There are many reasons to link up based on the needs of others, our mutual needs and our own development.

6. We look after everyone in the group. We are kind. It’s okay for someone to just be in the group particularly if they’re going through something difficult. The group is a place of friendship, support, respite and growth.

7. We attend meetings. It is our responsibility to participate in all meetings. But life happens and the odd miss is fine but we are conscious that our input is needed with others to continue to build the community. If we are unable to be present at a meeting then we let others know. Indeed, we value the fact that someone else may be turning up simply because we are there.

8. We recognise that we all develop as individuals on our own path, in our own way, in our own time and at our own pace. We are not in competition with each other. Sometimes we have to be patient with others.

9. We always use positive language – positivity it is a cornerstone of our way of being. Irrespective of what may have happened or not happened, our approach is always to look forward, use “can-do” language and be positive.

10. We never try and sell to each other. We share our skills, knowledge, products and services at no cost to help other group members suceed.

11. We bring in new people to the group so that we can share with them and help them. We work actively to grow Work it Out! to make its benefits available to others.

12. We build the Work it Out! organisation by looking for opportunities to develop and support local Work it Out!! groups in new areas.

13. We promote each other. We introduce people who can help with the interests and plans of others. We like and share social media posts by others. We link to people from our website.

14. We continue to grow and succeed by operating in this way of at all times. If someone is not acting in accordance with the above points, we gently remind them of the expected Work it Out! values and behaviour.

15. We read and act directly in line with this list of values and behaviours on a regular basis to ensure that each of us is fully playing our part and continually bringing new energy and focus to the group.  This is our personal audit, yardstick and commitment.

Work it Out! is a lifelong invitation to a different way of being. Everyone is welcome to  join us.

Join the Meitheal

The word “meitheal” describes the old Irish tradition where from time immemorial people in rural communities gathered together on a neighbour’s farm to help save the hay or some other crop. Each person would help their neighbour who would in turn reciprocate. They brought different levels and types of skills and expertise to the collective – some were better than others at specific activities and over time some became known locally as specialists in that area. They acted as a team and everybody benefited in some way.

Strong relationships and respect among those involved were built up by thoses in the meitheal. They worked hard, were fed and “watered” by the host and these were usually looked forward to as times of great fun and camaraderie. Essentially these individuals built community. This “meitheal” principle still lives on in many areas  to the present time where local groups are established on a  bottom up basis, driven by local people working together  for the common good.

It typifies some of our many great community “sean fhocal’s” or proverbs such as  “Faoi scáth a chéile a mhaireann na ndaoine” – The people live in each other’s shadow or “Ní neart go cur le chéile”- There is no strength without unity or perhaps even more literally  -There is no strength without coming together.

Meitheal also very aptly and succinctly describes the spirit that underpins and permeates the Work it Out! way of being and behaving.
