Just a note to thank you for all your help in putting my CV together for the application. This as you know is a really important opportunity for me and I needed to give it my best shot. You went way beyond CV writing and I am truly grateful for your expertise and clarity.

The way that you helped me to position my career and re-frame what I thought were the 'negatives' was so good.

The process also (as you said) helped me to get ready for the interview, for in crafting the CV I was facing up to key questions - and looking at how best to highlight my strengths and contribution.

I feel so much more confident about the interview which is next week!

Thanks for agreeing to help me with some interview preparation. I'm working on your list of questions!!!

Catch you later.
Mark.

Hi Des

I hope you are well! I just wanted to say thanks again for the advice you gave me and to update you.

I fell off the horse as you know for a while and it has taken me time to gather myself and get back on it again!  My aim was to follow your advice with 'workpieces' – so here is where I am:
  • I'm on the board of the Local Area Group (with £8m to spend on rural development and a nice chance for me to put back into the community, get extra training and network with local Councillors).
  • I'm now also on the board of a Counselling service. My cousin runs it and they help people with mental health issues (I've a soft spot for this).
  • I joined the local Festival Committee and will help run this local community festival in the summer - you know I love events :-)
  • My main workpiece however, is that I now work as an Education and Awareness Officer for a homeless charity which is a welcome break from community relations (I needed it) and a very satisfying job. This has started to take wings since the beginning of the year.
To make extra money:
  • I built a website at work which will be launched soon. A fellow worker asked me to build one for her B&B so I started last night, have the Home page finished and will complete it in my spare time in the next week. If I could get 10 of these a year it will be a nice little earner.
  • I went to a local auction and bought a vintage Omega watch, took it to London last week and used the opportunity to visit friends, family and university mates. I sold the watch at auction and I made a nice profit (no point in being too greedy) and I will reinvest the lot to buy another. Just keep going until I've got 2 watches, then 3, etc, etc.
  • I invested in a singer songwriter a few years back. He didn’t do much but I needed to get some return given my redundancy, so I chased him.  To cut a long story short he's offered me rights to 5 songs and I working to get them into the hands of the right artist! You never know I might have a ‘No 1’ hit on my hands!
  • I got my first £25 for an hours freelance community relations facilitation last week and I am in process of getting onto the Council’s select list. I hope to get some ‘bits n pieces’ from this...I have the tools/skills!
I'm busy, can pay my mortgage (interest with a little capital) and enjoy a bit of fun. ed to be much higher) but I'm confident that I will meet that responsibility too in time and hopefully find some cash for a trip to NY next year!

I'm happy Des, life is good and I'm excited (very) about all of my workpieces. They need more work and development but I really feel that I'm getting some momentum going and I'm not shy of a bit a hard graft!

Your advice and guidance has been really useful. I try to get others to think in that way too.

Will keep you updated as I go.

Hope all is good with you and that you’re still putting people on a good pathway!

Cheers

John

Hi Des

I found the session really useful. It was not what I had expected at all.

It was very inspirational. It's a totally new way of thinking!
I was surprised how easy it was to establish the four areas of specialism but I am really happy that's who I am and that's what I want to do.  I am not generally negative but I didn't realise that the conflict I have encountered had such a detrimental effect. So the feedback and candour has been enlightening. It was a bit of a shock to realise you cannot have one sample CV to send to everyone - but that's obvious now.

I am amazed at how the narrative you have written in your email totally changes who I am and redefines the skills I have. I really need to get away from thinking as I do and more towards being the consultant expert.

The session with you has made me much more positive about the future.

It has really helped to clear my mind - and I am already thinking differently - very differently.

Looking forward to meeting again and moving forward!

Gerry

Hi Des

Thanks for a an amazing meeting this morning. I was unsure what to expect as I'd never done anything like this before - but you were so understanding - friendly, professional, ambitious for me and totally results focussed.

The session was really enjoyable - challenging at times but so empowering. I literally feel like a completely new person and excited to work through the plan and ideas you helped me to develop. I see myself in a very different way and I know where and how I can make a real impact.

Looking forward to catching up next week. I've now got a busy schedule to get working on!!

Thanks again.
Jen

Good Evening Des,

Apologies for the late reply - I just made it home for the football - my afternoon snowballed into a number of things that meant a much latter arrival home than planned.

It was very nice to meet you today and I have taken a lot from what you said.  I am very excited to see how it progresses and I realise that it is within my own gift to make things happen.

I am reviewing the notes I took today and have done a bit of (very early stage) research into various consultancy roles - to see how I can progress this aspect and I have confirmed that I am going to take the trip to China in October and the Canton Fair.  (I've even got the page open on another tab right now to look at the travel visa).  I have also spoken to my friend who designs websites, organises search results, and is a general IT wiz - so any online help with the plans that develop is absolutely covered. I have also started my affirmation list.

Thank-you for taking the time to draft the email following the meeting - I have copied and pasted it into a word doc so that I can channel ideas and lists from it and make sure I cover all the bases - I have also spoken to my father and we have arranged a follow-up brainstorming session to look at various possibilities.

I am also going to focus on expanding my network and increasing my networking activity.  So as you can see, I have a lot to work on!!
I have no doubt this won't be the last you will hear from me as I continue along this journey.  Who knows where it will end.

Thanks very much!
Harriet

Hi Des

Thanks so much for a really inspirational and fruitful meeting! I’ve already started to see and feel some clarity around all the issues I have.

I have already ‘stepped back' and am letting all of today’s thoughts and ideas percolate through. Indeed, I have started to write down some specific practical plans as we discussed. It’s funny for example, how I hadn't really considered the involvement of others or building a team of people who would probably love to work with me or help me.

Today I feel like a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders.
Talk next week - thanks again

Steven
